서울대학교 건축학과와 뉴욕컬럼비아대학교 건축대학원을 졸업했다. Tai Soo Kim Partners와 창조건축에서 실무를 한 후 한양대학교를 거쳐 2019년 부임했다. 건축설계와 건축설계이론을 전공으로 하고 있다. 저서로는 「건축, 음악처럼 듣고 미술처럼 보다(효형출판, 1998)」, 「그대가 본 이 거리를 말하라(효형출판, 1999)」, 「건축을 묻다(효형출판, 2009)」, 「또 한 권의 벽돌(효형출판, 2011)」, 「배흘림기둥의 고백(효형출판, 2012)」, 「빨간 도시(효형출판, 2014)」, 「세모난 집 짓기(효형출판, 2016)」, 「상상의 책꽂이(효형출판, 2018)」 등이 있다.
공간의 조직은 사회의 조직을 반영한 결과다. 문제는 공간의 조직체로서 건물이 준공 후 고착화되는데 비해 사회는 유연히 변화한다는 데 있다. 따라서 건축과 사회는 영원히 갈등과 모순의 관계일 수밖에 없고 그 모순을 드러내어 새로운 사회에 맞는 건축적 제안을 하는 것이 건축가의 사회적 역할이다. 그 새로운 제안 역시 시간이 흘러 새로운 사회를 담기 어려워지면서 이전 사회를 이야기하는 침묵의 증언자로 남는다. 그런 건물들이 퇴적되어 도시는 오래된 도서관과 같은 역사도시로 변모해나간다. 지금 우리가 사는 시대의 좌표를 찾고 건물의 모순을 드러내 사회가 갖는 문제의 건축적 대안을 찾기 위해 필요한 것이 지적 탐구와 창조적 능력이다. 그 탐구와 창조의 교집합을 찾아 나가는 것이 우리의 작업이다.

Hyun SEO is a Professor of Architecture and served as a Chair of the Department of Architecture at Seoul National University. Prior to this appointment, he was the Dean of the School of Architecture at Hanyang University. He is the founder and principal of SALT workshop, a design and research office focusing on optimum structural solutions.
His key built projects include the Hyohyung Publishing Office, Paju Book City Daycare Centre, and the Seoul Book Repository. His works have been recognized by the national institutes and regional municipalities. Furthermore, he holds several patents relating to deployable architecture and tensile structures.
In addition to his design work, he is a published author and a regular contributor to the national newspapers; his area of interest revolves around architecture, urbanism, and contemporary socio-spatial issues. He is a celebrated author and has received awards for his publications and has been recognized for his contributions to the field of architecture by the Seoul Metropolitan Government.
