Architecture is and has been an anthropocentric practice. However, many architects are now rethinking the ways in which the human and nonhuman occupy space. For the citizens of Seoul, the most common way to experience nature is at a park or in the mountains. Nature is there to color the space in shades of green and is meant to be no more than a background for human activity. This spatial relationship furthers the distinction between human and nonhuman and disconnects us from the rest of the world, preventing us from being truly present. Posthumanism is a school of thought which challenges this original notion of the human. We have traditionally defined ‘human’ by first deciding what it is not. Just as the orient was constructed to provide an identity for the occident, this type of dualism is an attempt to simplify a complex and dynamic world. Posthumanism suggests that the distinction between human and nonhuman is not only unclear, but also insignificant. The notion of the human is open and complex. Namsan is a prime example of how the human and nonhuman collide and intertwine. It is neither a pristine natural environment, nor an entirely manmade hill. Namsan is surrounded by and a part of a dense urban fabric, with a distinctly posthuman ecosystem that warrants extensive research and maintenance. This project adds an ecological research center to an abandoned site in Namsan. It is a process of redefining Namsan and exploring a closer relationship with the nonhuman.
