Renovation
해방촌 아트갤러리 ‘THE WALL’은 갤러리 관장의 신혼집이기도 했던 25년된 다가구주택을 재탄생시킨 곳이다. 규모는 작지만, ‘THE WALL’이라고 붙여진 이름처럼 다양한 사연을 가진 벽과 그 재료들이 만들어내는 공간에 대한 고민이 담겨있다.
해방촌 더월 갤러리 전시는 2018년 가을 현장 답사를 시작으로 2019년 가을 갤러리를 오픈하기까지의 여정에 대한 것이다. 직접 실측하고 기록하며 재해석하고, 일부는 덜어내고, 일부는 옮기며, 또 새로운 것을 덧붙여갔던 그 과정을 완성된 공간 속에서 다시 경험할 수 있는 전시였다.
김승회 교수님이 지도를 맡은 대학원 설계 스튜디오에서도 같은 대상지에 대한 전시를 준비했다. 「다섯, 순수박물관」에 참여한 다섯 작가들은 해방촌과 용산 미군기지 경계부의 서로 다른 역사적 배경이 충돌하는 땅에서 그들이 담고 싶은 사물을 의미 있는 공간에 놓으려 시도하는 것을 주제로 전시를 하였다.
The art gallery 'THE WALL' in Haebangchon is a renovation project of a 25 year old multi-family house that used to be the newlywed home of the director of the gallery. Despite the gallery’s petite size, the walls of the gallery tell various stories and the composition of materials portray the architect’s thoughts of the space, like the name of the gallery ‘THE WALL.’
The exhibition is about the journey which started from the field trip in the fall of 2018 to the opening of the gallery in the following fall. Through this exhibition, ‘KYWC Architects’ hopes to deliver the process of; on-site measuring and recording, reinterpretation of the existing building, removing and moving parts of the house, and finally adding new components, in which the ‘process’ of the gallery can be felt within the finished space.
