The primary research interest of the AUTL (Architectural and Urban Theory Laboratory) is to thematize the everyday as the ethical basis for architectural and urban creation, to explore various facets of the everyday situations and their structure, and to re-establish the significance of architectural and urban design in reference to them. A probe into the everyday, which is given pre-reflectively to us, leads to a series of inquiries into issues such as the body, perception, situation, memory, concrete and abstract spaces, tectonics and representation, program and, lastly, how a production based on an internal abstract logic comes to acquire sustainability – sustainability in the sense of an object’s being incorporated into the fabric of the everyday. In terms of urbanism, the AUTL explores the nature of the everyday in a (mega)metropolis as the shared contemporary condition of life, seeks to transform institutions, as they are the very platforms that enact “living-together,” and to exercise a historicity-based orientation in innovating an urban place. The members of the AUTL participate in national and international conferences, field trips to national and international sites, and regular Lab seminars to cultivate their capacity as an architect or a researcher. They also participate in writing activities to complete papers, theses, books and essays, and in design activities of architectural and urban nature.
