1985년 서울대 건축학과를 졸업하고 1992년 같은 대학에서 조선시대의 씨족마을에 대한 연구로 박사학위를 받았다. 이후 목포대학교 건축공학과를 거쳐 1997년부터 서울대학에서 한국건축과 아시아건축에 대한 강의와 연구를 담당하고 있다. 주요 관심분야는, 동아시아의 목구조 전통, 한국 주거사, 아시아 건축의 비교 연구, 건축문화 유산의 기록과 보존 등이며, [중국북경가가풍경], [3칸x3칸, 한국건축의 유형학적 접근], [전남의 건축문화재], [경주 양동마을] 등의 저서와 [서양목조건축] 등의 역서를 비롯한 많은 논문이 있으며, [규장각의 근대도면], [베트남의 도시와 건축], [한옥과 한국주택] 등의 저서가 출간 예정이다. 2002년 일본학술진흥회(JSPS) 초빙 연구원, 2003-04년 Harvard-Yenching Institute Visiting Scholar, 2010-11 년 Fulbright Visiting Scholar(U.C.Berkeley), 2015년 Kyushu University Visiting Professor를 역임하였으며, 규장각한국학연구원 운영위원, 서울대박물관 운영위원, 서울학연구소 운영위원, 대한건축학회, 한국건축역사학회, 한국주거학회, 한국교육시설학회 등의 임원으로 활동하고 있다.

 

건축은 그것의 토양이 된 자연 환경과 그것을 둘러싼 사회 환경, 그리고 그러한 조건 속에서 최선의 해답을 찾아내려는 관계자들의 의지로 완성된다. 건축역사는 이러한 조건과 결과 사이의 관계를 찾아내는 지적 작업이다. 시간의 흐름 속에서 변화의 추세를 포착하고, 변화의 요인을 추려내며, 나아가 인과관계의 틀을 구성하는 것을 목표로 한다.

Pf. Jeon graduated from Department of Architecture, SNU in 1985 and received a Ph.D from the same university on a study of Lineage Village in Choson Dynasty in 1992. Going through Department of Architecture of Mokpo National University, he has taught and researched on Architecture of Korea and Asia since 1997 at SNU. His major research interests are the tradition of timber structure in the East Asia, the history of the housing architecture, comparative study on Asian architecture, record and preservation of the inheritance of architectural culture and etc. He was invited as a visiting researcher of Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS) in 2002, Harvard Yenching Institute in 2003-2004 and Fulbright Visiting Scholar (U.C.Berkely) in 2010-2011. Furthermore he is a member of steering committee at Kyujanggak Institute For Korean Studies, Seoul national University Museum, the Institute of Seoul Studies and the executive at Architectural Institute of Korea, Korean Association of Architectural History, The Korean Housing Association, and Korean Institue of Educational Facilities.

 

Architecture is completed through natural environment providing soil, surrounding social environment, and the will of people concerned trying to find the best solution with these conditions. Architectural History is the intellectual work which figures out the relation between these conditions and results. It aims to catch trends of change in the passage of time, select causes of change and finally organize the frame of causal relationship.
