대한민국 건축사인 조항만은 서울대학교 건축학과와 뉴욕의 컬럼비아대학교 건축대학원에서 수학하였고 서울의 ㈜ 경영위치 건축사사무소, ㈜ 아이아크 건축사사무소, 뉴욕의 GreenbergFarrow Architecture에서 10여 년의 실무를 거친 후 2006년 뉴욕 H Architecture, P.C. 의 설립부터 참여하여 이 후Design Principal 로서 7년간 디자인을 총괄하며 여러 중요 프로젝트를 수행하였다. 2013년 가을부터는 서울대학교 건축학과 교수로 재직 중이며, 파트너 서지영과 함께 TAAL Architects (www.taal-architects.com)의 공동대표로서 작품과 교육 및 연구를 병행하고 있다. 그는 대한건축학회(AIK), 한국건축가협회(KIA), 한국문화공간건축학회(KICA), 한국공간디자인학회(KISD)의 정회원 이며 정부청사 혁신위원회 건축부분위원, 서울시교육청 신청사 공간자문관, 서울대학교 시흥캠퍼스본부 건설추진단장 및 부본부장 등을 역임하였다.
TAALab (Towards A new Architecture Lab)의 관심은 건축의 ‘미래’, ‘도구’, ‘중립성과 잠재생명력‘이며, 인간, 건축, 도시, 자연에서 이와 관계된 토픽과 이슈를 선정하고 연구한다.
미래: 새로움과 차이는 필연이다. ‘건축의 미래는 과거나 현재와는 다를 것’이라는 명제는 ‘모든 것은 변한다‘는 것이 인간이 의지할 수 있는 우주 단 하나의 진리라는 점에 미루어 의심하기 어렵다. 건축설계는 창작이라는 그 본질상 오로지 미래를 지향한다. 과거와 현재의 인간, 건축, 도시, 자연에 근거하지만 결국은 미래를 만드는 것이다.
도구: 건축의 컨셉과 아이디어, 다이어그램, 스케치, 도면, 이미지, 모형, 3D Modeling, BIM 등은 모두 그것이 구현하려는 건축의 실존에 앞선 재현과 예측의 도구일 뿐이다. 그러나 도구를 통해 표현되는 미래의 건축은 도구의 가능성과 한계에 그 운명을 의지한다.
중립성과 잠재생명력: 건축의 비물질적인 가치인 최대의 해석가능성과 선택을 가능하게 하는 ‘잠재생명력’은 효율성, 기능, 미적 느낌, 스타일, 메시지를 포함한 어떤 것도 강요하지 않는 건축의 ‘중립성‘에서 기인한다. 중립성이 구현된 건축은 합리적 조합의 물질적, 기술적 토대를 바탕으로 이루어진 변화와 다의적 해석이 가능한 건축의 플랫폼이라고 할 수 있다.

Hangman Zo, a licensed Korean architect, studied at Dept. of Architecture & Architectural Engineering at Seoul National University and GSAPP of the Columbia University in New York. After 10 years of practice in the KYWC Architects, iArc Architects, Seoul and GreenbergFarrow Architecture, New York, he joined H Architecture, P.C. New York as a Design Principal from its establishment, 2006, and had been designed and managed various projects for 7 years. He is a professor at DAAE, Seoul National University from the fall of 2013, and co-operates TAAL Architects(www.taal-architects.com)with his partner Jiyoung Seo. He is a full member of Architectural Institute of Korea (AIK), Korean Institute of Architects(KIA), The Korean Institute of Culture Architecture (KICA), and Korean Institute of Spatial Design (KISD).
Main interests of TAALab (Towards A new Architecture Lab) are including ‘Future’, ‘Tools’ and ‘Neutrality & Entelechy’ of architecture. The lab will select & research topics and issues related key words above from human, architecture city and nature.
Future: Novelty and difference are inevitable. Since the only absolute truth that human being can rely on in the universe is ‘Everything must change’, it’s very hard to be suspicious about the hypothesis ‘The future of architecture will be different from its present and past’. Architectural design in its nature as creation belongs to the future. It stands on the past and present grounds of human, architecture, city and nature, but, eventually constitutes the upcoming.
Tool: Concepts, ideas, diagrams, sketches, drawings, images, models, 3D modeling and BIM, etc are just tools for prediction and representation of architecture before its existence. However, the fate of architecture in the future depends on current possibilities and limits of the tools that produce architecture.
Neutrality and Entelechy: Entelechy, the immaterial values of architecture - maximum possibilities of interpretation and choice; come from neutrality independent from any imposition including efficiency, function, aesthetics, style and message. The architecture of neutrality can be explained as the platform to host multiple changes and interpretations based on rational combination of technical and physical substructure.
