Renewing Perception - 김포 폐기물 처리장 건축
인간이 살아가는 과정은 폐기물을 발생시키며, 에너지를 필요로 한다. 폐기물 처리장은 이러한 폐기물을 처리하면서 에너지를 생산 및 공급하는 필수적인 시설이지만, 동시에 사람들이 거부감을 갖는 기피시설이기도 하다. 이 프로젝트는 열병합 발전소와 스키장 등 여가 공간을 성공적으로 결합한 사례인 덴마크의 아마게르 바케(Amager Bakke)에서 아이디어를 얻어 사람들이 즐겁게 방문할 수 있는 시설을 디자인하는 것을 목표로 삼았다.
이러한 목표를 위해 현재 서울 방화동에 위치한 폐기물 처리장을 이전하기 위한 후보지 중 하나로 논의되고 있는 김포시 대곶면 대벽리를 부지로 선택했다. 해당 사이트를 배경으로 폐기물 처리장, 글램핑(glamorous + camping, 호화로운 캠핑)장과 스파 등 휴양 시설, 그리고 폐기물 처리 과정을 견학할 수 있는 문화 시설을 유기적으로 연결한 건축물을 설계하였다. 또한 전체를 순환하는 동선과 중앙의 아트리움을 통해 방문객들이 다양한 경험을 할 수 있도록 구성하였다.
이 프로젝트를 통해 폐기물 처리장을 지역의 랜드마크로 만들고, 더 나아가 이번 프로젝트의 제목인 ‘Renewing Perception’과 같이 발전소에 대한 부정적인 인식을 새롭게 개선할 수 있는 아이디어를 제시하고자 한다.
Renewing Perception - Waste-to-Energy Plant in Gimpo
Human life generates waste and requires energy. While waste-to-energy plants are essential facilities that take care of waste and supply energy, they are also unpleasant facilities that people avoid. This project, inspired by Amager Bakke in Denmark which successfully combined an energy plant with recreational spaces, aims to design a facility that people can visit and enjoy.
Daebyeok-ri, Daegot-myeon, Gimpo-si was chosen as our site because it is being mentioned as a new location for the energy plant currently in Banghwa-dong, Seoul. We created a design that closely connects the energy plant, recreational facilities — glamping (glamorous camping) areas and spas — and cultural facilities where visitors can take tours. In addition, the design includes a circulating route and a central atrium to provide visitors with various experiences.
Through this project, we would like to present ideas that can transform a waste-to-energy plant into a local landmark and, furthermore, improve negative images of energy plants, as suggested in the project’s title ‘Renewing Perception.’
