이 프로젝트는 더 이상 일이 인생의 시간과 공간을 규정하지 못하는 사회에 대한 이야기이다. 지금도 진행 중인 노동 방식의 변화-근로시간의 단축, 원격근무의 보편화, 기계노동의 인간노동 대체-가 특이점을 넘어섰을 때, 기본적인 생존권 보장에 대한 사회적 합의가 이루어졌다면 오랜 기간 인간의 삶을 규정해오던 노동의 공백은 무엇으로 채워질까? 정해진 시간동안, 정해진 공간에서 수행되는 ‘표준적 노동’ 개념이 사라진 이 사회의 사람들은, 자신에게 성취감과 즐거움을 주는 활동을 찾아 자율적으로 자신의 삶을 구성하는 주체들이다. 또한 회사 등 전통적 공동체를 대신하여 자신의 삶을 공유하고 연대할 타인들을 일상 속에서 찾는 사람들이다. 이들의 삶은 ‘중간 영역’이라는 공간적 기반을 통해 실현된다. 중간 영역은 도시 곳곳에 위치해 사적 거주 공간 밖으로 연장된 모두의 생활 영역이자, 교류와 연대의 구심점이다. 중간 영역을 통해 생활과 관계의 영역을 확장하는 이들을, 중간인이라 부르기로 한다.
This project is about a society where our life is no longer defined by work. As we encounter drastic changes regarding human labor such as reduced working hours and generalization of remote work, more and more people are talking about the end of work. But then the question is: what will fill in the space left behind such changes? In what way should we live when we do not work full-time? People of this society, in search for activities that give them a sense of self-fulfillment, discipline themselves to build their own mode of life. They also search for associates to interact with, in replacement of traditional communities. Such lifestyle is feasible only on a spatial basis of ‘mid-field’, which refers to a public life area which is open to everyone. As it is located here and there in a city, ‘mid-field’ serves as the center of communication and solidarity. People, who seek to expand their living area both in terms of space and relationship, based on ‘mid-field’, is called ‘mid-fielders’.
