학생회관은 학생들에게 다양한 기능을 제공하는 복합 시설물이며, 가장 근본적인 목적은 명칭에서도 알 수 있듯이 학생들에게 ‘모임’의 기능을 제공하는 것이다. 그러나 현재 서울대학교 학생회관 내에서 모임이 이루어지는 경우는 학생회관 내부에 위치하는 동아리방에서만 제한적으로 이루어지며, 동아리에 속하지 않은 학내 구성원들이 학생회관에서 모임을 가지는 경우가 드물다. 대신, 학생들은 단순히 학생회관 내의 편의시설을 이용하기 위한 목적으로 방문하는 경우가 대다수이며, 용무가 끝나면 학생회관에 머무를 이유도, 공간도 존재하지 않는다. 즉, 현재 서울대학교 학생회관은 ‘회(會)’의 기능을 상실하였다. 1970년대 서울대학교가 관악캠퍼스로 이전할 당시 지어진 서울대학교 학생회관은 약 50년이 지난 지금까지도 초기의 모습에서 크게 달라지지 않았다. 50년 전과 현재에 학생회관에 요구되는 기능의 차이를 반영할 수 없는 기존 학생회관 건물은 학생회관이 모임의 기능을 상실하게 된 가장 큰 원인으로 작용한다. 다양한 원인 분석을 통해 새로운 학생회관의 필요성을 절감하며, 모임의 기능을 상실한 서울대학교 학생회관의 신축을 주제로 삼아 구조, 환경, 시공 세 분야에 대한 탐구를 통해 학생회관의 건축적 요구사항을 실현하고자 하는 것이 이번 프로젝트의 목적이다. “학생들이 모일 수 있는 공간의 창출”, “시대 상황 속에서 변화해온 모임의 형태를 상정”, “코로나 이후 흩어졌던 학생들이 다시 학교로 모임”이라는 의미를 담아 본 프로젝트의 제목을 ‘재회(再會, Reunion)’로 결정했다.
The student hall is a complex facility that provides students with various functions, and the most fundamental purpose is to provide students with the function of "meeting", as the name suggests. However, meetings currently take place within the student hall of Seoul National University are limited only in club rooms located inside the student hall, and members of the school who are not part of the club rarely hold meetings at the student hall. Instead, most students visit simply for the purpose of using convenience facilities in the student hall, and there is no reason or space to stay in the student hall after business is over. In other words, the current Seoul National University’s student hall has lost the function of the 'meeting'. The Seoul National University Student hall, which was built when Seoul National University moved to Gwanak Campus in the 1970s, has not changed much from its initial appearance until now, for about 50 years. Existing student hall buildings that cannot reflect the differences in functions required by student halls 50 years ago and now act as the biggest cause of the student hall's loss of function. The purpose of this project is to realize the architectural requirements of the student hall by exploring the three areas of structure, environment, and construction, with the theme of the new student hall. The title of the project was Reunion, which means "creating a space for students to gather," "presuming the form of meetings that have changed in the context of the times," and "Gathering of the Students scattered after COVID-19 to school."
