성(聖)과 속(俗)의 사이
Between the Sacred and the Secular
예로부터 동굴, 언덕, 산, 샘과 같은 자연물은 신과 영험한 힘이 존재한다고 여겨 신성시되었고, 도시가 형성되면서 종교시설은 도시 안으로 들어왔다. 도시의 바쁜 생활에서 벗어나 자신과 주변을 통찰하고자 하는 현대인이 명상과 기도를 하며 정신적 위안을 받을 수 있는 영적인 공간은 종교시설이다. 그러나 도시 안에 위치한 수많은 종교시설은 해당시설에 등록되지 않은 종교인과 비종교인에게 닫힌 공간이며, 종교시설의 거대한 스케일과 높은 첨탑은 주변 도시경관과 부조화를 이룬다. 코로나19로 종교시설은 폐쇄되거나 한정된 인원만 수용하게 되었으며, 종교활동은 온라인으로 전환되었다. 이에 종교의례가 온라인 플랫폼에 공개되어 종교시설에 가지 않아도 시장에서 상품을 고르듯이 마음에 드는 종교 컨텐츠를 소비할 수 있게 되었다. 물리적인 종교시설이 규정하는 종교 공동체의 의미가 흐려지고 있는 이 시점에서 특정 종교단체의 물리적인 공간 점유는 더 이상 시설의 지속가능성 측면에서 유효하지 않다. 앞으로의 종교시설은 대규모의 종교 공동체가 모이는 집회를 위한 이질적인 볼륨의 공간이 아닌, 종교인과 비종교인 모두에게 경계가 열려있는 오픈 스페이스의 공간이라고 생각한다. 자연(聖)과 도시(俗)의 경계 영역에 위치한 대지를 자연으로 돌려주면서 입맛대로 종교를 소비하는 다양한 종교인에게 성소를 제공하고, 영적 공간을 필요로 하는 비종교인에게는 걷기와 좌선을 통한 명상이 이루어질 수 있는 공간을 제안한다.
A spiritual space where people who want to reflect on themselves and their surroundings can meditate, pray, and receive spiritual comfort is a religious facility. However, many religious facilities in the city are closed spaces to people who are not registered. The huge scale and tall spires of religious facilities do not harmonize with the urban landscape. Due to covid-19, religious facilities were shut down or accommodated only a limited number of people, and religious activities were conducted online. As a result, religious rituals have been released on online platforms, allowing people to consume their favorite religious content as if they were choosing products in the market without having to go to religious facilities. As the meaning of religious communities defined by physical religious facilities becomes ambiguous, the physical space occupied by specific religious groups is no longer valid in terms of the sustainability of the facilities. I think the future religious facilities are not huge spaces for large-scale gathering, but open spaces for both religious and non-religious people. Artificial topographical variations appear in the boundary between nature and the city. By returning the site to nature, it provides sanctuary to various religious people, and provides trails and meditation spaces for non-religious people who need spiritual space.
