자살생존자를 위한 공간
Place for Suicide Survivors
현대 도시에서 삶과 죽음의 영역은 명확하게 구분되어있다. 도시 속에서 죽음은 부정적인 것이며 죽음과 관련된 시설들을 가능한 멀리 떨어트려 놓으려고 한다. 죽음의 공간을 멀리하는 태도는 자연스럽게 죽음을 언급하는 것에 대해서 불편하게 만들었으며, 사회 속에서 죽음은 터부시되었다. 하지만 죽음이 금기가 되어서는 안된다고 생각한다. 누구나 맞이하는 것이며, 우리 삶의 연장선에 있고, 언제나 우리 옆에 있기 때문이다.
죽음의 공간이 도시 안에 들어서는 장소로 한강을 선택했다. 한강은 자살과 밀접한 관계를 가진다. 과거부터 한강은 자살의 장소로 묘사되었으며, 수년 동안의 통계에 의하면 매일 한 명 이상 한강에서 자살 시도를 한다. 자살을 뜻하는 ‘한강 간다’라는 신조어가 생기는 등 한강은 서울에서 자살의 대표적 장소가 되었다. 이에 한강은 자살에 관해 이야기를 할 수 있는 장소성을 가진다.
서빙고동 한강공원에 자살생존자들이 위로를 받을 수 있는 공간을 제안한다. 일반적으로 자살 생존자는 지인의 죽음을 겪고 고통을 버티며 생존해가는 사람들을 뜻한다. 죽음을 금지한 도시 속에서 감정을 숨기고 살아가야 했던 이들이 감정을 털어낼 수 있는 장소를 만들고자 한다.
한강은 죽음의 상징이자 동시에 삶의 상징이기도 하다. 강물은 역류하지 않고 한 방향으로 흘러간다는 것이 우리의 삶과 닮아있다. 계절에 따라 변하는 수위 고저 차의 반복은 순환하는 세계 속에서 살아가는 우리를 보는듯하다. 1년에 한번 정도 일어나는 홍수는 우리에게 가끔씩 일어나는 예상하지 못한 사건과도 같다. 물과의 다양한 관계를 통해 치유의 공간을 제안한다.
공간의 구성은 일상에서의 탈출 - 마우솔레움 – 순환의 공간 – 일상으로 복귀 – 마지막 사색의 공간 총 5개의 매스로 이루어진다. 도심 한가운데서 갈대밭을 따라 내려가 일상에서의 벗어나게 된다. 마우솔레움은 도시 속에서 금지되어버린 죽음을 위한 메모리얼이자 지인의 죽음에 관해 이야기 할 수 없었던 자살생존자들을 감정에 대한 추모 공간이다. 순환의 공간은 삶을 이야기 하는 공간으로, 한강의 수위에 따라 공간이 계속 변한다. 크고 작으며 높고 낮은 공간들을 돌아다니며 개인의 시간을 가진다. 순환의 공간에 있는 기억 아카이브는 자살생존자들의 이야기들을 보관하며, 시간을 초월해 이들이 서로 이야기를 하며 위로를 받는 공간이다. 강의 하류를 따라 걸어가며 다시 일상으로 복귀를 한다. 돌아가기 전 한강의 한 가운데서 미처 정리하지 못한 감정을 한번 더 추스른다.
Modern City separates space of death from space of life. Death has become something negative and we try to place death related facilities as far as we can from city we live. This kind of attitude led death to become a taboo in modern culture. Death is subject extremely discomforting to talk about. However, Death shouldn’t be forbidden in place where we live. Everyone experiences death whether it’s close or far from us. Death is an extension of life, and it’s always next to us.
Han River has been chosen as space for death. Han river has close relationship with suicide. Since past, Han river was often depicted as place for suicide. Also according to recent years of statistics, average of more than one attempted suicides happen on bridges of Han river every day. Such phenomenon led to birth of a slang ‘Going to Han river’ which means suicide. Han river has become sense of place as symbol of suicide.
I suggest a place for suicide survivors at Han river park, Seobinggo-dong. General definition of suicide survivors is one of the family and friends of someone who has died by suicide. In a city of forbidden death, suicide survivors had to hide their emotions and carry on with their life. Place I want to create is where they can get it off their chest.
Han river is symbol of death but also a symbol of life. Water that can only flow one way and cycling water lever is a metaphor of how our life work. Flood that sometimes happen is an unexpected event that we run into as we go on with our life. Experiencing water in different ways creates a sense of calmness and sublime.
Space consists of 5 masses; Escape from city – Mausoleum – Space of circulation – Returning to norm – Last place to be lost in thought. From center of city, we walk down the reed field to escape from city. Mausoleum is a memorial for forbidden death and all the emotions that suicide survivors had to suppress. Space of circulation is about life. Changing river level creates different space every time we visit. Wandering around large and small spaces, we take our time and relax. Memory archive is a place suicide survivors store their stories. These stories transcend time and console other suicide survivors. Walking along downstream, we return to normal life. Just before exiting, there is place to be lost in thought, where we can get ourselves together for last time before we finally go back to city.
