신화소의 도시
City of Mythmes
인간 정체성을 지탱했던 초월적 이상들과 그것을 추구하던 공동체가 붕괴되고 난 후, 우리는 점점 확고한 삶의 지표를 잃고 있다. 우리의 현재는, 무수한 미완성의 장소, 시간, 물질, 의미들의 배열 속에 뒤엉켜, 한 치 앞도 보이지 않을 만큼 두텁고, 탁하고, 또 위태롭다.
이러한 자기상실의 고비에서 인간은 언제나 신화를 읊곤 하였다. 신화는 진실과 허구 사이의 특별한 이야기 문화로, 일련의 상징 체계를 통해 복잡한 현실을 다듬고 의미를 부여한다. 그리고 그 결과, 신화는 '진실로 현재에' 있기 위한 창조적인 수단이 된다.
인류학자 클로드 레비스트로스는 신화들에 반복적으로 등장하는 기능적 기본 단위를 신화소mythmes라고 불렀다. 그에 따르면, 신화라는 언어문화는 통합적인 거대 내러티브로 보이지만 사실은 무수한 신화소들로 짜깁기 된 혼성모방이다. 이들은 손재주꾼bricoleur에 의해 주기적으로 해체되고 시대상에 맞게 다시 구축된다.
지난 수십 년 동안 도시의 요소들은 권력과 이념과 법규와 기술의 간섭에 의해 새로 세워지고, 덧대지고, 대체되어 왔다. 그 과정에서 서로 다른 논리를 가지고 세워진 이질적 요소들이 많은 곳에서 충돌하고, 그 이접의 현장에서는 어색해 보이는 배타적 절충과 독립적 공존이 이루어진다. 이런 오늘날의 도시는, 신화의 귀퉁이에서 떨어져 나온 다양한 신화소들이 담긴 손재주꾼의 도구 상자와 같다. 현재를 표류하는 우리들이 할 일은, 도시 구성 요소인 그 신화소들을 해체하고 다시 그러모아 ‘신화소의 도시’를 구축하여, 현재에 맞는 새로운 신화를 창출하는 것이다.
After the collapse of the transcendental ideals that supported human identity and the community that pursued them, we are losing our firm indicators of life. Our present - entangled in innumerable unfinished configurations of places, times, matters, and meanings - is so thick, turbid, and disturbing that we can’t see an inch ahead.
In this crisis of self-loss, humans used to recite myths. Mythology is a special linguistic culture between truth and fiction, which refine and give meaning to complex realities through a series of symbolic systems. And, as a result, mythology becomes a creative means of being 'truly present'.
Anthropologist Claude Levi Strauss called ‘Mythmes’ functional basic units that appear repeatedly in myths. According to him, the linguistic culture of mythology looks like an integrated giant narrative, but in fact it is a pastiche of a myriad of mythmes. They are periodically dismantled and rebuilt to suit to the present, by dexterous ‘bricoleurs’, the mythology writers.
Over the past few decades, elements of cities have been rebuilt, added and replaced by interference of political power, ideology, law and technology. In the process, heterogeneous elements built with different logic collide in many places, and there is an exclusive compromise and independent coexistence that seems awkward at the scene of the disjunction. Today's city is like a bricoleur's toolbox, containing a variety of mythmes disengaged from the corner of mythology. Our task to do is to dismantle the mythmes, which are urban components, and to construct a "City of Mythmes" to create a new myth that fits the present.
