이화주 _ 지음의 전시, 전시의 지음
건축은, 예술은 인정을 먹고 자란다. 아직 이름을 갖지 못한 이들에게는 자리가 없다. 각자의 자리에서 치열함에도 그들의 존재는 종종 투명해진다. 그렇게 기억되지 못한 자들은 자신이 살아 있음을 증명해야 한다. 이에, 그들은 사적 공간에서의 자취를 사회에 드러내고자 한다. 과정을 보여주는 전시는 그들이 버텨온 시간에 대한 외침이며, 잊히지 않기 위한 몸짓이다. 전시는 무대가 되고, 무대를 통해 사회와 마주한다.
성과를 우선으로 확인하며 과정은 뒤편으로 물러난다. 일상과 맞닿아 있는 지점들이 어떠한 방식과 고민을 통해 만들어지는지 접하기는 어렵다. 하나의 결과가 만들어지기까지의 여정이 보여지는 공간이 필요하다. 여기서, 성충이 아닌 변태하는 일련의 일대기를 확인한다. 잠시 밀려났던 과정이 전면으로 나온다. 과정이 전람이 되어 다시 다가간다. 종국의 결과만이 단계적으로 보이는 것에서 나아가 그 사이 보이지 못한 모습이 나타난다.
그들의 연속적인 전시처럼 공간도 도시 속에서 이어진다. 각자의 역할을 수행하면서도 뒤돌아 있지 않는다. 서로를 마주보고 이어져 있으며 완연히 연결된다. 대중의 발걸음은 공간을 자유로이 오르내리며, 시선은 과정들을 훑어가며 단절되어 존재했던 점들이 선으로 다시 그려진다.
흩어졌던 개인이 다시 모인다. 정해진 이미지, 장르는 없다. 개인이 다루는 모든 과정이 전시된다. 고정된 것은 존재하지 않고 그어진 경계는 희미 해진다. 각자가 걸어 나가던 자취가 집중되고, 흔적이 모인다. 점점 더 확장되고 기존에 없는 것들을 수용해 나간다. 건축가는 도시로 다시금 스며들어 간다. 가장 작은 단위로 쪼개졌던 파편이 또 다른 파편으로 재생산되고 이는 더 큰 존재의 파편이 되어간다. 끊어진 것들이 아닌, 하나의 선으로 이어진 도시의 공간이 형성된다. 여기서 새롭게 건축이, 예술이 자란다.
Architecture and art feed on recognition. Those without a name find no place for themselves. Though each fights fiercely in their own corner, their existence often turns transparent. The unremembered must prove they are alive. In this, they seek to reveal the traces of their private spaces to society. An exhibition that shows process becomes a cry echoing the time they have endured, a gesture against forgetting. The exhibition becomes a stage, and through that stage, they confront society.
We prioritize results, pushing the process aside. It is rare to witness how the places that intersect with daily life come into being, through what struggles and decisions. We need a space where the journey toward a single outcome is visible. Here, rather than the final form, we trace the metamorphosis—the sequence of becoming. The process, once pushed away, comes to the forefront. The journey becomes an exhibition that moves closer once more. We go beyond seeing only the stepwise results, revealing what was hidden between them.
Like their continuous exhibitions, the spaces extend within the city. Each fulfills its role without turning away. Facing one another, they remain connected, seamlessly. Visitors wander freely through the space; their gaze sweeps across the processes, connecting once-isolated points into lines.
Scattered individuals gather once again. There is no set image, no fixed genre. Every process they undertake becomes part of the exhibition. Nothing remains fixed. Each footprint they leave behind is brought into focus, each trace collected. The exhibition expands, embracing what did not previously exist. The architect dissolves back into the city. Fragments once broken down into the smallest units are reproduced into new fragments, which in turn become part of larger fragments of existence. Not as disconnected pieces, but as lines that form a continuous urban space. Here, new architecture and art grow.
