이승아 _ 벽을 바라보기
사이트는 종로3가의 서울극장이 있던 곳이다. 서울극장은 70년 가까이 유지되다 2021년 폐업하였다.
주변은 작고 낮은 건물들이 매우 좁은 틈을 골목으로 두며 붙어있고, 소규모 상업과 수공 제조업 상가들이 밀집해있다.
현재 서울극장은 허물어지고, 타일 등의 바닥 포장면 등만이 듬성듬성 남아서 다음의 쓰임을 기다리고 있다.
이 자리의 빈 터를 남기며 도시의 여백을 주고자 한다.
소규모의 상영관들을 다시 세우고 그 앞의 터는 그대로 남긴다. 이 터에는 서울극장의 흔적이 남아 장소를 드러내는 기표가 된다.
넓고 높은 공간은 일시적인 영화제, 촬영 등의 행사를 일으킨다.
영화관에 가서 영화를 보는 시간은 종종 결말을 기다리며 견디는 시간이 되기도 한다.
그리고 이 경험은 짧은 영상을 보면서도 배속과 건너뛰기를 하는 혼자만의 시간들과는 대비된다.
영화가 지루하더라도 기꺼이 상영관에 갇혀 그 시간을 보내려 영화관을 찾는 사람들과 복잡한 종로를 지나는 바쁜 도시의 사람들에게 목적지가 아닌 비어있는 경유지가 되기를 바란다.
The site is where the Seoul Theater was located in Jongno 3-ga. The theater stood there for nearly 70 years before closing in 2021.
Now it's gone. Only fragments remain, like broken pavements and remnants of the old foundation scattered across the ground. The area around the site is dense, filled with small, low-rise buildings and narrow alleyways. It is occupied by tightly packed shops and workshops.
By keeping the empty lot, the project creates an intentional open space in the dense urban fabric.
A few small-scale screening rooms are rebuilt, but the open space in front is left as it is. This ground, holding the remnants of the old foundation, becomes a signifier of the place.
A wide and tall space is added, intended for occasional film festivals, shoots, and other events.
Watching a film in a theater can sometimes feel like waiting for it to end. This experience is different from watching short videos alone, skipping through at double speed.
Even if the film is boring, some people still choose to stay and sit through it. For those people, and for the ones passing through the dense streets of Jongno, this place is meant to be not a destination, but an empty stop along the way.
