신예림 _ 도시에 구멍내기: 익명의 도시 산책이 만들어내는 약한 저항의 힘

계몽 이후 권력은 거대한 시스템, 즉 도시를 탄생시켰다. 권력에 위협이 되는 것은 악으로 간주되었고, 도시는 감시, 예측, 통제 가능한 질서 속에서 권력의 필요에 협조하는 거대 인프라로 기능하게 되었다. 공원, 광장, 로비 등의 공공공간은 시민의 자유를 표방하는 것 같지만 실제로는 권력의 감시와 통제가 치밀히 작동하는 판옵티콘 구조 속에 있다. 시민들은 자유롭게 걷는 듯 하지만 그 동선은 권력이 설계한 회로에 선형적으로 종속된다. 이들은 권력 앞에 낱낱이 코드화된 실명으로서 존재할 수 밖에 없는 것이다.

나는 이러한 권력의 시스템, 즉 도시 어딘가에 에러를 내고자 한다. 시민들의 행동이 감시, 예측, 통제 불가능해지면서 권력이 무력화되는 순간(진정한 산책의 순간)을 발생시키는 것이다.

서울역은 서울에서 가장 복잡하고 기능 중심적인 장소이다. 권력의 필요에 가장 협조적이면서, 동시에 도시의 발 아래에 숨어 가장 저항적일 수 있는 곳이기도 하다. 나는 이곳에서 시민들이 머무는 방식과 동선을 분석하고, 기능에 실패한 비효율, 비기능의 공간들을 추적했다. 추적 결과, 그러한 비효율, 비기능의 공간들에서는 일순간 사람들의 이동이 멎고 방향이 사라졌다. 또한 권력의 입장에서 실패된 이 공간들은 서울역 곳곳에 숨어있었다. 나는 이들을 연결하여 새로운 회로를 만들었고, 서울역의 기존 회로에 삽입, 기생시켰다. 이로써 서울역의 기능 뿐인 실명의 회로에, 기능 없이 실패한 익명의 회로(도시 산책자의 회로)가 간섭하게 된다. 이 속에서 사람들은 신체와 건축에만 몰입하며 권력이 예측할 수 없는 움직임을 만들어내고, 결국 권력이 코드화할 수 없는 익명의 존재가 되어버린다. 목적·방향 없는 걷기, 예측 불가능한 행동은 권력의 감시를 비껴가고, 실명의 객체들이 익명의 주체들로 전환된다.

이 프로젝트는 권력이 도시 속에서 숨기고 제거해온 여백 속에, 진정한 의미의 무목적, 무방향의 도시 산책 행위와 이를 통한 권력에의 약한 저항의 가능성을 새겨넣는 시도이다.

Following the Enlightenment, power gave birth to a vast system—namely, the city. Anything considered a threat to power was regarded as evil, and the city came to function as a massive infrastructure that cooperated with the needs of authority through a system of surveillance, prediction, and control. Public spaces such as parks, plazas, and lobbies may appear to advocate for civic freedom, but in reality, they operate within a panoptic structure where surveillance and control are meticulously embedded. Citizens seem to walk freely, but their movements are linearly subordinated to circuits pre-designed by power. They are compelled to exist as identified and codified entities under authority—deprived of anonymity.

I seek to introduce an error into this system of power—into the city itself. My aim is to create moments in which citizens’ behavior becomes unsupervisable, unpredictable, and uncontrollable—moments of true flânerie that render power impotent.

Seoul Station is the most complex and functionally driven site in Seoul. It is a place that most actively cooperates with authority, while simultaneously harboring, beneath its surface, the greatest potential for resistance. In this location, I analyzed circulation patterns and modes of occupancy, and tracked down inefficient, dysfunctional spaces—those that have failed in their assigned functions. Through this investigation, I discovered that in such spaces, people’s movement momentarily halted, and their sense of direction dissipated. From the perspective of power, these spaces were considered failures, yet they were scattered throughout the station, quietly resisting the dominant order. I connected these spaces to form a new circuit, which I then inserted into and parasitized upon the existing functional circuit of Seoul Station. In doing so, an anonymous, dysfunctional circuit—the circuit of the urban flâneur—begins to interfere with the official, functional circuit of identified flows. Within this interference, individuals become immersed in their bodies and in the architecture, producing movements that power cannot predict. In turn, they become anonymous beings that authority cannot codify. Aimless walking and unpredictable behavior escape the gaze of power, transforming identified objects into anonymous subjects.

This project inscribes within the urban voids—those hidden and erased by power—the possibility of a subtle form of resistance, through truly purposeless and directionless urban wandering.
