"Things and BODY" / The first studio focuses on "Understanding the World." The world is approached as texts that are to be read. The two texts are: THINGS and BODY. /
TEXT 1: THING
Through fine observation and analysis of every objects, student develop their skills to creatively reinterpret the object and express those reinterpretations. They will then express their experiences of the object through architectural media such as drawings and models.
TEXT 2 : BODY-CUBE
This exerise explores the relation between the human body and architectural settings. They will design a 1.8m cubic space in full-scale, located within the university campus, that interacts both with the site condition and the human body.

"Understanding of Urban Context"
The Second Studio is an exploration of the city, the scene of our daily lives, and creation of meaningful places within the city. While the theme "Understanding the World" is maintained, students will move on to thee more concrete time and spaces of our lives. They will analyze two areas of Seoul, proposing small-scale spaces where the city and architecture encounter each other. The first project focuses on responding to the site, while the second project focuses on proposing a structurally sound architectural space, being run jointly with the lecture coures 'Building Structure 1."

This studio focuses close on the senses/feelings created by a particular building material, structural potential and formation of spaces. Students are encouraged to think not in terms of selecting an appropriate material for a pre-determined structure but in ters of exploring how a selected material cn create a space and how that structure can coexist in the surrounding environment. The challenge is to design a structure wherein flexible and tectonic materials and building methods coexist that also appeals to the physical senses in how light illuminate a space, how exterior skin of the building forms and alters the inner spaces and in forming different levels of the building. Students will study and explore the ways in which building a structure with common and familiar material can create wholly different environments.

The 3rd year design studio focuses on moving on from single-use buildings to multiple-use buildings. Therefore, a repetitive 30 x 30m column-and-beam structure is introduced, with building programs for various users. Students will practice this concept through the design of a library, a synthesis of a public hall, book storage, and logistics. As a public building, the understanding of concepts such as 'barrier-free design' and 'universal access' is also very important. For the first month, studios are run jointly, focusing on spatial design, which are individually developed over the next three months.
The 2nd year studio focuses on moving on from multiple-use buildings to specific-use buildings. Therefore, the focusing of structure moves from a simple structure to complex structure. Also the usage of the building focuses on concert hall and students will learn how to design three-dimensional flow of line and relationship between the architecture and city context.

For the architect, the material is not considered as the element of architecture; it is architecture itself. Therefore, the material should not be decided at the end of the design process, but should be handled at the beginning with site and program. Through this course, students understand the character and usage of architectural materials. And based on this, they will learn about mateirals and architectural details, and think about relationship between actual architecture space and materials. On the other hand, new materiality will be explored by consideration about concept and essence of materials. By making objects with real materials like wood, glass, concrete, Students experiment materials, materiality of substance, creative expression and original interpretation about a property of matter. Through this understanding of materials, students will get a comprehensive understanding and prospect by cases where the use of new materiality is realized in building projects.

We live in an era of architectural object. Icons and landmark projects have become a de rigueur requirment for any self-respecting international city. This studio seeks an alternative method of engagement with the city, a method which refrains from developing an architecture that incessantly strives for maximum visibility and unique selling points. Our objective is to engage with the frenetic context of Seoul, its real DNA, not by denying its past presence but adapting the context to a new programme.

The students will perform practical design process via the whole program of this studio. Starting with working out a scheme, the students will go through design development, building system and details step by step. Experiencing all this steps, the students will acquire how to deal with the architectural concept and process of design, Performing total process of planning, the students will complete the architectural project achieving the aim of each steps.

As a performance stage for human activity that accumulates and retracts in repetitive motion, the essence of the city, both in its physical and metaphysical sense, receives a great deal of influence from the deeds of the city dwellers. One of the essential elements that makes the city a city is in the intrinsic strategic value carried by the use and location of the boundary between nature and city. From the moment nature inside of a city becomes an important topic of architectural discourse, the goal of the studio is to guide the student toward a proposal that maximizes on the potentiality afforded by a sensible union between the greenery and the existing city conditions.
