About Thomas Hongbin Kang:

강홍빈 선생님은 서울대학교에서 건축학을 전공하고, 미국 하버드대학교에서 도시설계학 석사, 매사추세츠공과대학(MIT)에서 도시계획학 박사 학위를 취득하였다. 이후 건설부, KIST 부설 지역개발연구소, 서울대학교 환경계획연구소, 한국주택공사 주택연구소 등에서 도시정책과 계획 분야의 연구 및 실무를 병행하였다. 서울시에서는 시정연구관, 시정개발연구원장(현 서울연구원 원장), 행정1부시장을 역임하며 도시 행정 전반에 걸쳐 중추적인 역할을 수행하였는데, 재직 기간 동안 ‘남산 제모습 찾기’ 사업, 월드컵공원 및 디지털미디어시티 조성, 가회동과 인사동의 역사환경 보전, 서울시립미술관과 서울역사박물관 개관 등 굵직한 도시 프로젝트들을 주도하였다. 이후 서울시립대학교 도시과학대 교수로 재직하며 교육과 연구를 병행하였고, 2009년부터 2016년까지 서울역사박물관장을 역임한 뒤, 서울연구원 이사장으로 선임되어 도시정책 연구와 공공행정의 발전에 기여하였다.

Dr. Hongbin Kang received his degree in architecture from Seoul National University, followed by a Master’s in Urban Design from Harvard University and a Ph.D. in Urban Planning from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). He pursued both research and practice in the field of urban policy and planning at various institutions, including the Ministry of Construction, the Regional Development Research Institute affiliated with KIST, the Environmental Planning Institute at Seoul National University, and the Housing Research Institute of the Korea Housing Corporation.

In the Seoul Metropolitan Government, he held key positions such as Policy Research Officer, President of the Seoul Development Institute (now the Seoul Institute), and First Vice Mayor for Administrative Affairs, playing a pivotal role in shaping the city’s urban administration. During his tenure, he led major urban initiatives including the Namsan Restoration Project, the creation of World Cup Park and Digital Media City, the preservation of the historical environments of Gahoe-dong and Insa-dong, and the establishment of the Seoul Museum of Art and the Seoul Museum of History.

Following his public service, he served as a professor at the University of Seoul’s College of Urban Sciences, engaging in both education and research. From 2009 to 2016, he was the Director of the Seoul Museum of History, and was later appointed Chair of the Seoul Institute, where he contributed significantly to the advancement of urban policy research and public administration.
