<워크샵 내용>
Devious: 목표 달성을 위해 은밀한 전술을 능수능란하게 보여주는 것.
여러 도시들이 문화적, 생태적, 경제적 질문들의 답을 위해 고군분투하는 과정 속에서 디자인은 도시 계획과 건축 사이의 범위에서 빠르게 필요성을 얻고 있다. 그러나 도시 수준의 규모를 의미 없이 단지 초대형 건물로 개념화하는 건축가의 제한된 도구는 규율에 있어서 공백을 만들었다. 한편, landscape urbanism 같이 교묘하게 명명화 되었으나 모호한 개념은 시민들의 내외부 영역을 조정하는데 있어 건축과 어바니즘 사이에서 건축의 효율성 없이 중요한 영역을 주장해왔다.
이 스튜디오에서는 민첩하고 강력한 지형선을 재창조하는 것에서 시작한다. 수백년 전엔 수학적 발명이었지만 지금은 보편화된 등고선을 지상과 가정한 관계에서 풀어내고 빌딩, 경관, 도시의 스케일을 통합할 수 있는 강력한 도구로써 재배치한다. 특정한 목표 달성을 위해 의도적으로 남용한 관습인 'devious' 기법을 통해, 지형선은 물리적, 사회정치적 이슈 속에서 새로운 공간적 역량을 얻을 수 있다.
곧 새롭게 단장될 잠실 올림픽 단지와 현대 GBC intermodal 개발의 교차점에 있는 우리 사이트는 전형적인 건축, 어바니즘, 경관 사이에서 정의되지 않은 영역이다.
비록 이 사이트가 서울에서 중요한 중심 중 하나가 되더라도 상호 연결된 지역성을 띠는 이곳의 잠재력은 더 많은 관심이 필요하다. SNU 학생들과 Abedian 학교 학생들은 2주간 협업을 통해서 건축과 경관 프로그램을 접목한 'devious topographic' 모델을 새롭게 연결된 다기능 도시 노드로서 개발한다.

Devious Topographies: Jamsil
An international collaboration workshop between Bond University Abedian School of Architecture, Popoulous, and Seoul National University DAAE.

Who: Up to 15 SNU DAAE students with a minimum prerequisite of completing studio 3. Masters candidates also welcome.

This summer workshop will examine the emerging design territory between the city, building, and landscape. It will be held in collaboration with the Bond University 4th-year undergraduate program. The workshop coordinators will be Profs. Mark Bagguley (Bond University Abedian School of Architecture), and John Hong, (SNU DAAE). Prof. Brian Toyota (Bond University Abedian School of Architecture) will act as a Tutor and James Pearce (Principal, Popolous) will be a collaborating instructor.
Studio Description

Showing a skillful use of underhanded tactics to achieve goals.
Design at the scale between urban planning and architecture is rapidly gaining relevance as cities increasingly grapple with cultural, ecological, and economic questions. However, the limited tools of the architect that ineffectively conceptualize the territorial scale as merely ‘extra-large buildings’ have opened up a disciplinary void. Meanwhile, cleverly branded but ambiguous concepts such as ‘landscape urbanism’ have claimed this important operational field between architecture and urbanism without architecture’s efficacy in coordinating interior and exterior civic domains.
This studio will begin with a reinvention of the nimble and potent topographic line. Originally a centuries-old mathematical invention before its now common use by the landscape discipline, we will release the contour line from its assumed relationship to the ground - redeploying it as a powerful design tool that can synthesize the scale of building, landscape, and city. Through ‘devious’ techniques that intentionally misuse conventions to achieve specific goals, the topographic line can gain new spatial capabilities in the coordination of physical and socio-political issues.
Our site, the intersection of soon-to-be-renewed Jamsil Olympic Complex and the Hyundai GBC intermodal development, is emblematic of this undefined realm between architecture, urbanism, and landscape. Although this area will be one of the most important urban centers in Seoul, its potential as a new interconnected urban realm needs more specific attention. Through a 2-week collaboration between SNU and Abedian School students, we will develop ‘Devious Topographic’ models that combine architecture, landscape, and program into a new connected and multi-functional urban node.
