Message from Department Chair

Department of Architecture and Architectural Engineering at Seoul National University is the first architectural education institute established in Korea, carrying out the highest researches in architecturerelated fields. As part of the School of Engineering, the department is divided into Architecture and Architectural Engineering programs, with design, history & theory being taught in the Architecture Program, and structural engineering, construction management, environment being taught in the Architectural Engineering Program.

Inheriting the traditions of our pioneers in modern engineering education during the Korean Empire, the DAAE was established as part of the College of Engineering in 1946, a year after the nation’s independence. Since then, the 3,000 graduates have played leading roles in the areas of architectural design and engineering, construction management, and city planning.

With the objective of providing an education program at an international level, a 5 year Architecture Program was put in place with the objective of producing professional architects, and a 4-year Architectural Engineering Program was likewise established in 2002. The DAAE became the first school in Korea to receive the education accreditation from an international accreditation board. In 2005, the department moved to the new, contemporary research building within the main campus to provide students with the highest quality of Message from the Department Chair working environment through new studios, laboratories, library, archives, model workshop room, photography studio and print room. The DAAE is also listed as 19th in the 2015 by Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) World University Rankings which is arguably the renowned and respected rankings of its kind.

Beginning in 2016, DAAE will recruit students into an integrated program that will share an enriched and collaborative common curriculum. After 2 years of coursework, the students will then enter a curriculum that is divided into either Architecture (5-year program) or Architectural Engineering (4-year program).

The DAAE pursues a total, integrated approach that includes architectural structure, technology, art and culture in the architecture realm. As a leading university in Korea, Seoul National University strives to become the finest institute in Asia that takes the role of creating an effective communication amongst its regional nations as well as at a global stage. The university also upholds the objective of creating the finest leaders in our society through the education of strong ethical awareness and social responsibility.

To achieve this, the DAAE is employing the finest academics and supporting them in order for them to maintain and strengthen their research credentials at a global stage. 19 full-time academics have studied in a variety of international institutions such as the United States, Japan, France, many of whom have taught in England, Singapore and the United States. These academics are active participants of a variety of symposiums and social groups, working to encourage international collaboration and exchange of the architectural culture of Korea. Emeritus professors Chang Sup Yoon, Lee Kwang No Lee represent the DAAE as a member of the National Academy of Sciences and the Art Academy. Emeritus professors Kwang-No Lee and Jin Kyoon Kim were commissioned to the FAIA, emeritus professor Sung Mok Hong and professor Kwang Woo Kim are acting as members of the National Academy Engineering of Korea.

The DAAE provides regular exchange programs with Polytechnic University of Madrid (Spain), Graz University of Technology(Austria), the National University of Singapore and others, along with jointworkshops with the likes of University of Pennsylvania, and Tokyo University. The DAAE utilizes every winter, summer breaks to invite overseas professionals to hold workshops. In addition, the university funds graduate students to study abroad, and the College of Engineering funds undergraduate students to go on exchange programs so that they have an academic background overseas prior to graduating from the program. These initiatives assist students in broadening their international awareness.

Through our alumni associations active in each field of architecture, the DAAE holds corporate invitation seminars for the entire students, invites foreign erudite scholars around 10 times a year and hosts a variety of symposiums and seminars to encourage persistent international collaboration and exchange. Kenneth Frampton, Rem Koolhaas, Toyo Ito, Mario Botta, Richard Rogers, Kengo Kuma, are some of the renowned architects who have held lectures and design critiques, and internship opportunities are being provided for students to work at leading architectural, consulting firms such as Kohl Pederson Fox, Skidmore Owings and Merrill, and Ove Arup. Renowned academics across Asia, Europe and the United States are holding regular lectures at the DAAE also.

Along with research into urban housing initiatives in countries such as China and Vietnam, we are participating in the government’s ODA to take charge of providing professional support. In addition, the department promotes major cultural assets overseas and is working to develop new technologies based on traditional building methods.

Based on strict ethical awareness, the DAAE stresses high level morality, which is reflected on various examinations and assessments. Student-organized meetings and other activities are supported by the department so that students actively participate in the university events as well as to provide an environment in which leadership skills can be strengthened. Not only do the student bodies organize domestic, overseas excursions as well as exhibitions, they also run group tutorial on photography, fine arts, computers and other extracurricular activities of interest.

The scale of the DAAE at Seoul National University may be smaller in comparison with architectural institutions abroad, but we pride ourselves in high quality education, resources support, and focused learning for each student, enabling them to become an expert in their field.
