Master’s Program

1. Requirement of Course Completion
① The Master’s students must earn more than 15 credits of the courses from the Department of Architecture. The courses from any other departments must be approved by the designated thesis advisor and the chair of Architecture Department.
② Minimum 24 credits are required for course work completion.(GPA 3.0↑)
③ The course “ Reading and Research” can be taken as many times as the student chooses. However, the credits will be recognized only once(3 credits) towards coursework completion.(effect from 2010)
④ Students can obtain no more than 9 credits per semester. However, if the course “Reading and Research” is included, students can obtain up 12 credits per semester.

2. Master’s Thesis Submission Qualification Exam
① The foreign language examination applicants must have registered at least 1 semester.
② The Comprehensive Exam applicants must have registered at least 2 semesters and completed the 'environmental protection and safety education' & 'education for life protection'.
③ The thesis submission qualification exam contains more than 3 questions based on majors, and students are to select 3 questions to answer. For Architecture Major, each of the questions of examination will be from different professors, and students are to choose and answer 3 questions.
④ The score of each question must exceed 40% to be added to the total score, and the total qualification score must be at least 60 points out of 100 points.

3. Master’s Thesis Submission Qualification
① Students can have qualification for submitting their graduation thesis when they fulfill General Examination(major test) and Foreign Language Test.
② For Architecture Major, the Master’s students are required to publish at least 1 thesis in KCI level academic journals. The students may replace that with awarded project participated individually in competitions such as the followings:
A. Awarded project from architectural competitions hosted by domestic or foreign government
B. Awarded project from architectural competitions hosted by the primary architectural related organization such as Architectural Institute of Korea, Korean Institute of Architects, Korea Architects Institute, or any other organizations of equivalent level out of country) Awarded project from domestic and foreign competitions that is published in architectural academic journals, such as Avery Index or A&HCI. (For students who enrolled after 2016 spring semester)
③ For Architectural Engineering Majors, the Master’s students are required to present at symposiums or publish at least 1 thesis.
All the regulation regarding writing, reviewing, submitting the thesis should follow Seoul National University’s regulations.

Ph.D Program

1. Requirement of Course Completion
① Ph.D students must earn more than 1/2 of the total required credits from Department of Architecture, Architectural Engineering. The courses from any other departments must be approved by the designated thesis advisor and the chair of architecture department.
② Ph.D students are required to earn minimum of 36 credits, (60 credits including the 24 credits from Master’s course), and the Combined Master’s and Ph.D students must earn minimum of 60 credits.
③ The course ‘Reading and Research’ is a 3 credit course, and it can only be counted twice in the total credits to graduate.
④ Combined Master’s and Ph.D students can obtain maximum of 12 credits per semester, and only 9 credits of the course ‘Reading and Research’ can be counted towards the total credits. (3 credits before the 4th semester and 6 credits after 5th semester)
⑤For full-time Ph.D students, the maximum credits per semester is 9 credits, and 12 credits if the course ‘Reading and Research’ is included.
⑥ For part-time Ph.D students, the maximum credits per semester is 6 credits, and 9 credits if the course ‘Reading and Research’ is included.

2. Ph.D Thesis Submission Qualification Exam
① The Foreign Language Exam applicants must have registered at least 1 semester.
② The Comprehensive Exam applicants must have registered at least 2 semesters, and completed the 'environmental protection and safety education' & 'education for life protection'.
③ The details on the Comprehensive Exam complies with the outline set by the Graduate School Committee, and is operated by the Department of Architecture and Architectural Engineering. The results will be reported to the College Dean.
④ The exam includes at least 3 questions in each major, and students are to select and answer 3 questions. For architecture major, each of the questions of examination will be from different professors, and students are to choose and answer 3 questions.
⑤ The score of each question must exceed 40% to add to the total score, and the total qualification score must be at least 70 points out of 100 points.

3. Thesis Qualification
① Students can have qualification for submitting their graduation thesis when they fulfill General Examination(major test) and Foreign Language Test.
② In the semester of thesis submission, the student must be registered as a research student.
③ Architecture Major students must complete one of the followings:
A. Before submitting the thesis to the jury, the students must publish minimum of 250% worth of thesis related to the major or the thesis topic in KCI level academic journals, or present the thesis at an appropriate international conference and the quality of the thesis must be approved by the Graduate School Committee. The evaluation of the thesis that is written by more than 2 authors must be followed by Table 1.
B. The students must publish minimum of 1 SCI level thesis or international academic journals that are approved by the Academic Affairs Committee. 학사위원회 For the academic journals that do not have authorship priority, the number of authors must be less than 2. (Applies to Ph.D students who enrolled after spring 2016)
④ For Architectural Engineering Majors, the Ph.D students are required to complete the followings:
A. Before submitting the thesis to the jury, the student must publish minimum of 150% worth of thesis related to the major or the thesis topic in KCI level academic journals, or present the thesis at an appropriate international conference and the quality of the thesis must be approved by the Graduate School Committee. The evaluation of the thesis that is written by 2 authors must be followed by Table 1.
B. For Architectural Engineering Majors, the student must publish (or expected to) at least 1 thesis in SCI level academic journals before forming the thesis jury committee. The student must be the first or second author of the thesis.

4. Submit Thesis
Submission of Thesis Copy for Jury - Students who received the qualification to submit the thesis by the Graduate School Committee must submit a copy of the thesis to the Thesis Directing Committee when registering for thesis jury session.
